In a study commissioned by Leefmilieu Brussel, MAKER operates as a consultancy practice with expertise in developing future-oriented scenarios based on reversible design, modularity, and standardisation. This expertise was applied in the Reversible Design Checklist and Guide focusing on the spatial reversibility of buildings.
Using the Reversible Design Checklist, complemented by case studies, buildings were analysed for their potential to accommodate future adaptations. The methodology links spatial and technical criteria to diferent use scenarios: housing, offices, education and polyvalent use, and is grounded in the applicable legislative framework and design guidelines from Leefmilieu Brussels.
The study provides structured analyses and clear decision-making tools that can be applied early in the design process, supporting informed choices regarding reuse, minimal intervention, and long-term flexibility. It serves as a practical guide for designers and clients engaged in adaptive reuse projects, promoting circular construction and the transition of building elements across multiple life cycles.
Central to our approach is the concept of shearing layers, which views buildings as layered systems with different life spans. By distinguishing between long-life structural elements and short-life adaptable components, MAKER develops strategies that prioritise spatial and technical reversibility, enabling buildings to respond to changing needs while minimising life cycle costs.
